The Himalaya is an extremely active region that experiences frequent disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, and debris flows. These events represent major hazards to local communities, and may also play an important role in the longer term landscape evolution of the mountain belt. Through targeted monitoring efforts, including the use of seismic techniques combined with hydrological monitoring, suspended sediment sampling, remote sensing, repeat high resolution topographic surveys, and field observations, we can gain new insights into the dynamics and impacts of extreme geomorphic events such as the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, a glacial lake outburst flood, and a rockslide-triggered mass flow event.
