The scientific objectives of the IRN Andes-FrenSZ are to better understand the behavior and dynamics of subduction zones, and to better characterize and anticipate the associated telluric hazards (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides).

The IRN aims to federate French research teams involved in these research topics, enhance their international visibility and facilitate collaborations with international partners involved in the study of the Andean (Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia) and Mexican subductions. The IRN brings together around a hundred scientists from a dozen institutions in France (Universities, IRD, CNRS) and maintains international partnerships with a dozen institutions in the South and in the rest of the world.
