Our objective with this video was to showcase the positive effect of physical activity ( PA / AP ) for reducing anxiety for the aging. We tried to present the concept of anxiety through its main characteristics. It is a perception of being tensed, worried, fearful and can be declined in two sorts : state and trait anxiety. Trait anxiety is about being predisposed, whereas state anxiety is about episodes of anxiety.
Then we thought that for old people with depression and loneliness, PA could be a good solution to improve symptoms.
Then, we analyzed studies which supported this idea. The first one was about the aging and yoga, with the objective of reducing anxiety, and the second one was about PA done at distance looking at a DVD program.
In the first study, we found an significant improvement in anxiety, as well as wellbeing, depression and self-control, along with the second study, which mainly found an improvement in depression and anxiety.
Thanks to the courses we took in psychology in addition those to studies, we were able to conclude that physical activity was beneficial for the aging, because it helps significantly improve symptoms of both depression and anxiety, which tend to be less present with aging, but more impactful since this population is more alone and dependant. In fact, old people’s well being was significantly better after PA, and so we are eager to develop it furthermore for the elderlies since it’s a good way to improve mental health.
