SOQETA Donatalia.

Lucas sends a video of himself expressing his concerns about his grandmother's wellbeing

and asks the host of the show for his help in making his grandmother understand the

benefits of sport for her health. In this episode the host addresses the importance of

engaging in physical activities for healthy aging habits, with the help of our special guest Dr

GAUZI.

Firstly, Dr GAUZI responds by emphasizing the importance of self-esteem, meaning the

confidence in one’s own worth or value, then he proceeds to explain how self-esteem may

impact one’s aging process in a positive or negative way in older individuals. In other

words, high self-esteem plays a fundamental role in the well-being of elderly people and

tends to lead them to successful aging. According to ROWE and KAHN, successful aging is

defined as high physical, psychological and social functioning in old age without major

diseases.

The host then mentions the studies of WURM, DIEL and their collaborators in 2017, which

explains the effects of one’s personal perception of aging on one’s overall health. For

example, if we have a negative perception of aging (“old people are fragile”), it could lead

to adopting poor habits and more health issues, whereas a positive perception of aging

could lead to healthier habits and a more successful aging.

Finally, Dr GAUZI discusses the studies of KLUSMANN, EVERS, and collaborators in 2011

which highlight how sport can help create a more positive perception of aging. In this

study, 247 German women over the age of 70 who practiced no more than one hour of

physical activity per week were divided into 3 groups: an active group which engaged in

physical activities, a sedentary group which continued their usual daily activities, and an

active control group which engaged in computer courses (editing pictures/videos, sending

e-mails, etc.) to ensure the accuracy of the sedentary group’s results.

After 6 months, the results showed that the women from the active group have a better

perception of aging than the other 2 groups. We can also point out that the active group

show a greater long-term motivation to engage in physical activity.

After proving that sport does indeed play a role in successful aging, we encourage

everyone, regardless of age, to engage in physical activities and encourage others in their

journey to stay in shape and live a happy, long life.
