Hi everyone, in this podcast we are going to discuss motivation for elders in our society ! We will talk about what happens during this stage of life, what motivates them or not to practice sport or physical activities, using two studies.

The first one was published in the journal of psychology of sport and exercice and was led by Maillot and his collaborators in 2019, the purpose was to understand what motivates elders to do sport and how they are impacted by their age. The study shows that they like to vary their physical activities, such as yoga, dance and running for the group of 60 to 70 years old. Between 71 and 91 years old, They more likely practice soft sports such as walking or Taï Chi. This shows that pleasure becomes the main source of motivation after 70 years old whereas, before 70, their health and sociability were predominant considerations.

The second study was made by Stephan and co in 2010 and published in the journal of aging and physical activity, the goal was to identify motivation differences between the women who give up on physical activity and the ones who don’t. Stephan based his study on the Self-determination theory, and the result shows that a weak motivation and a strong amotivation are the reasons why some women stop practicing. The women who persist in their practice can be classified into 3 categories : high combined, high introjected, moderate introjected.

We hope that you will enjoy watching, just as we enjoyed making it.
