The goal of our video was to link the effects of physical activities to physiological health thanks to the increase in self esteem with elderly people. We based our video on two studies. The first study is based on an experiment which takes 247 elderly women (70 to 93 years old) without any health issues and who don't do more than an hour of sports per week. Three groups equal in size are made out of those 247 women. One group doesn’t change anything to his habits, the second one has three 90 minute sessions of mental exercises each week and the last one does physical exercises with the same three 90 minute sessions per week. After six months, the results show us that the physical activity group had a significant increase in self esteem and that its motivation towards physical exercises was enhanced thus increasing positive self perception even more. The second study is a meta-analysis which aims to explain the effects of negative age stereotypes on the views of one’s aging which can be described as self esteem. This study shows us that the internalisation of negative age stereotypes which can be explained by the stereotype threat lead to a decrease of mental performance as well as an increase in depression and cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, the subjects that face this stereotype threat sees their health perception decreasing which makes them less likely to take care of themself thus decreasing even more their life expectancy. Overall, it has been shown that people who have a positive self perception gain as much as 7,5 years of life expectancy. To sum up, those studies show us that having a great self esteem is important for our life expectancy and mental health, especially with the elderly. One major lever of action in order to increase self esteem is physical activities.
