Self-perception of aging is a psychological concept that refers to how individuals evaluate their own aging process.
It reflects whether a person views their aging in a positive or negative way. Research has shown that these self-perceptions can have real effects on health and even on lifespan.
Two studies illustrate this idea. The first, conducted by Klusmann et al., examined how physical activity influences older women’s perception of aging. In this study, 247 women aged 70 to 93 were divided into three groups over a period of six months. The first group participated in regular physical exercise (three 90-minute sessions per week), the second group attended computer classes, and the third group continued their usual routine.
The results showed that the women who exercised experienced immediate enjoyment during the activity, which the authors refer to as “direct approach motivation.” This positive feeling reduced their dissatisfaction with aging compared to the other groups. In other words, enjoying physical activity seems to gradually improve how people perceive their own aging.
The second study, by Wurm et al., is a theoretical review that aimed to explain why and how perceptions of aging influence health.
The authors identified three main pathways. First, a physiological pathway: negative views of aging can increase stress, which harms the body over time. Second, a behavioral pathway: individuals with negative perceptions are less likely to engage in healthy behaviors such as exercising or seeking medical care. Third, a psychological pathway: negative beliefs can reduce a person’s sense of control, potentially leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Importantly, longitudinal research shows that individuals with more positive perceptions of aging live, on average, 7.5 years longer.
Together, these studies highlight that the way people perceive their own aging plays a significant role in their overall health.
