Personality is a psychological construct that is characterized by its uniqueness, consistency and internal dynamism.
In the first article, published in Health Psychology in 2017, 10 000 Australians were taken to test the bidirectional association between personality and physical activity. They took into account their age, sex, level of education and mental and physical health. The datas were taken between 2006 and 2014. As a result, we saw that personality has an influence on physical activity, but physical activity doesn't have any influence on personality. But the way physical activity and personality were measured can represent a limit because they are not really accurate.
In the second article, published in Psychol Aging in 2017, the authors seek to understand the connection between personality and physical activity in older people.
69 people took part in this experiment. The participants are eldery people living in the retirement home and are independent.
The experiment uses two measures : the NEO-PI3FH test and a wristband that tracks your activity levels.
This test consists of 120 questions with responses options ranging from “I completely agree” to “I completely disagree”. This test measures the level of neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and finally conscientiousness.
The wristband must be worn during seven days, for 15 hours a day. It measures each participant’s daily activity. The findings of this study are as follows. The most active individuals exhibit dominant traits: extraversion, conscientiousness and agreeableness. The least active individuals exhibit another dominant trait: higher neuroticism.
In summary, personality is characterized by its unicity, its consistency over time, and differs from mood, which is only a temporary state. Personality evolves over time under the influence of different factors.
In elderly, extraversion, openness to experiences, and emotional instability decrease, but agreeableness and conscientiousness increase.
